Bailey Young

Bailey Young was a CALS Undergraduate Research in the Archives Scholar (CURIAS) in 2016-2017. With the award, Bailey, who also served as the CALS Undergraduate Intern this past year, was able to attend a CALS-led summer training session on conducting archival research held at Penn State. Following that, Bailey received a CURIAS grant award that allowed her to visit Princeton University’s Firestone Library, which holds unpublished documents and correspondence between American poet Anne Sexton and her colleagues. According to Bailey, “Sexton’s writings were central to my honors thesis focused on the feminist voice in the 20th century, so the research that I conducted at Princeton as a CALS CURIAS scholar was very beneficial and pertinent to my work. By examining these unpublished documents, I could better understand who Sexton was in her day-to-day life as a mother, poet, and a woman, which greatly enhanced the originality and impact of my thesis. Overall, this experience provided valuable insight into the richness of working with a writer’s unpublished and less-well-known writing, and impressed upon me how important special collections and rare book libraries are to scholars.”
