Wild Nights with Emily

Featuring Guest Speaker Dr. Martha Nell Smith, Professor, Department of English, University of Maryland

Monday, September 23, 7-9:30 PM

The State Theatre

130 West College Avenue

Join us for a showing of the film WILD NIGHTS WITH EMILY!  The film follows Emily Dickinson (played by comedian Molly Shannon) and her prolific mid-nineteenth century writing career as well as her passionate, lifelong romantic relationship with another woman--her friend and sister-in-law Susan.  While seeking publication, Emily (Shannon) finds herself facing a troupe of male literary gatekeepers too confused by her genius to take her work seriously. Instead her work attracts the attention of an ambitious woman editor, who also sees Emily as a convenient cover for her own role in buttoned-up Amherst’s most bizarre love triangle. The film is vibrant, irreverent, and tender, as well as a timely critique of how women’s history is rewritten.

Following the film, Dr. Martha Nell Smith, who served as a special adviser for the film, will lead a Q&A discussion.  Dr. Smith is Distinguished Scholar-Teacher, Professor of English, and Founding Director of the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities at the University of Maryland.  Dr. Smith has published numerous scholarly works  on Dickinson and is the Coordinator and Executive Editor of the Dickinson Electronic Archives projects at the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities at the University of Virginia.
